Look out for lookouts

When responding to a store alarm or robbery-in-progress call, remember that threats may lurk outside the building as well as inside. As you approach the scene be cautious not to visually funnel in on the structure alone and completely disregard the surrounding area. Be sure to keep an eye out for getaway vehicles and lookouts.

A few things to look for that might be red flags:

• Vehicles that appear to be “out of place” in the lot (i.e., one car in an otherwise empty lot or a car parked in an odd position close to the door)
• Vehicles with multiple occupants
• Occupants who quickly duck down when you approach
• Occupants who refuse to make eye contact and act as though they don’t even see you when you approach
• Occupants who begin noticeably shuffling around inside their vehicle when you arrive
• Occupants showing obvious signs of nervousness (excessive movement, excitedly looking around, etc.)

Also avoid positioning yourself in front of an idling vehicle as you approach. If that car proves to be a getaway vehicle, you could be at risk of being run down.
