CHESTERTOWN, Md. — A man has died after exchanging gunfire with a sheriff’s deputy who was also shot at a home on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, authorities said Thursday.
Queen Anne’s County sheriff’s deputies were called to a domestic disturbance at a home in Chestertown on Wednesday night, retired Lt. Dale Patrick said in statement. The woman involved in that incident later showed up at the sheriff’s department’s headquarters. After midnight, the woman was escorted to her home to collect her belongings, and while they were inside the home, Patrick said a man armed himself with a shotgun and fired at Deputy 1st Class Warren Hogan, who returned fire. Both were struck.
Photos that Patrick took at the scene show police tape in front of a one-story home with Christmas decorations out front, including an inflated Santa Claus atop a chimney and a snowman.
Hogan was taken to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center, where Patrick said he is in critical condition after surgery.
The wounded man was taken to a hospital in Chestertown, where he was pronounced dead, Maryland State Police spokesman Greg Shipley said in an email. Authorities planned a briefing for media Thursday morning in Baltimore.
Hogan is white and the man was black, Patrick said. A deputy at the scene was wearing a body camera, he said.
