FORESTVILLE, Md. — An officer was seriously injured after being struck by a minivan while conducting a traffic stop on the side of the road Thursday.

According to CSN Baltimore, Officer Bashua Olaseha, 26, was struck and became trapped under the minivan.

CBS DC reports that the van hit three police cruisers during the incident.

The officer suffered serious injuries and was medevaced to a local hospital. He was still in the ICU Thursday afternoon, but is stable.

The driver of the van was also transported for care, according to NBC Washington.

Three officers were outside their cruisers when the crash occured. The other two officers at the scene were uninjured.

Police spokesperson Julie Parker credits ground made soft by rain for possibly saving the officer’s life, CSN Baltimore reported.

“This officer dove out of the way. The minivan ran over him, yet he was in that ditch, and being in that indentation probably is what saved his life,” Parker said.

The incident is under investigation.
