LELAND, N.C. — A Leland police officer was shot multiple times and the suspect killed, officials said Friday night.
Leland Police Chief Mike James confirmed at 9:30 p.m. that a Leland police officer had been shot and that the suspect “is down.” At a news conference near the scene Friday night, District Attorney Jon David said the suspect was killed in the incident and that the officer had been shot several times in the legs.
The officer was undergoing surgery at New Hanover Regional Medical Center late Friday, David said.
The names of the officer and suspect are being withheld until family members can be notified.
Investigators with the SBI were en route to take over the investigation, which is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings.
According to Brunswick County dispatch logs, a shooting was reported at 8:50 p.m. in the 1000-block of Bridgeport Way. David said the officer was responding to a disturbance call from the Windsor Park community.
