NY officer critical after struck by fleeing car

SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y. — An officer is in critical condition after being struck by a car fleeing a traffic stop.

Newsday reports 36-year-old Officer Nicholas Guerrero suffered a “very serious head injury” after he and Officer Heriberto Lugo stopped a car on an arrest warrant.

The driver fled, striking both officers. Guerrero was airlifted to a hospital in serious condition. Lugo underwent treatment for minor injuries and was released.

A manhunt for the driver then ensued. The suspect hit a vehicle after fleeing and later hijacked another vehicle with an accomplice.

Both suspects were later taken into custody. Their names have not been released.

Officer Guerrero has been with the department for four years. He is currently being monitored in a Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit, according to the report.
