It’s no secret many citizens know who the cops are even when we are off duty. From those who advertise their position in any way, to those who work in small jurisdictions and everyone knows you, to those like myself who everyone knows is a cop when you walk in the room because, well, you just look like a cop. It’s also no secret active shooters are never, ever, going to go away. If anything, they will only increase. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would see another active shooter incdent in Littleton, Co. Thank God the teachers who ended that incident weren’t as complacent in thought as I was. The next time you’re out with your family, pay extra special attention to the clothing you are wearing. With the rapidly rising popularity of tactical uniforms with brands such as 511, Propper, Tru-Spec, and others, trust me when I say the bad gusy know what we wear to work. The trend also appears to lean to many officers wearing this clothing off duty as well. Is it possible that tiny little 511 tag on the side of your pants could make you a target if caught in the middle of an active shooter incident? We all know the age old information of not carrying leo id in your wallet, pictures of your family, or wearing the “hey I’m a cop shirt” in pulblc. Not all bad guys are stupid, in fact, some are really rather smart. They pay attention to what we wear on and off duty an can identify us accordingly. Call me paranoid, but you won’t catch me wearing anything in public that would call attention to myself of my family as being an leo with the exception of my concealed gun and badge. Our tac uniforms are comfortable, but so is a pine box, especially if you’re not alive to know what you’re laying in.
