SPIRO, Okla. — Body cam footage has been released of an officer struggling with an armed man.
According to 5News, the suspect, John Reed, had a warrant out for his arrest tied to a child sexual abuse case.
The officer, whose name has not been released, arrived to Reed’s trailer July 30 after police received a tip about the suspect’s whereabouts.
“We were told that he may possibly be trying to flee the area is the reason why there was urgency to get out there and speak with him,” Spiro Police Chief Michael Draper told 5News.
On video, you can see the officer approach Reed and inquire about his warrants. He asks him to step out of the trailer, but Reed says he needs to put suspenders on. Reed walks back inside the trailer despite orders from the officer to stay put.
A struggle over Reed’s weapon ensued once the officer entered the trailer.
“Mr. Reed don’t do it,” the officer said. “Let me have the firearm, okay? Mr. Reed, please let go of the gun. I don’t want to die. I’ve got kids.”
The officer then fired his weapon. Reed was hit in the hip and is currently hospitalized with non life-threatening injuries. Upon release, he will be charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer.
The officer is on paid leave pending an investigation into the shooting, per policy.
