Try getting out of your own handcuffs. If you’ve tried before, you may find this extremely difficult so I suggest you have a “trusted” person with a cuff key ready in case you can’t free yourself. Practice with the cuffs in front and back, key holes up and down. Practice while sitting, standing or laying on one side (as if someone cuffed you and you are inside your own patrol car trunk).
Since I started practicing this, I have become quite good at it, which builds my officer survival confidence. Training for the worst is part of our job, so while it may sound silly (or look silly), the practice may save your life one day.
Also, be sure to keep a key(s) on your duty belt you can get to.
