Securing your knife for convenience and safety

We all know that the majority of officers carry one or more knives on them while on duty. Where do you secure yours?

The most common places I have seen are clipped onto any of the four standard pockets on uniform pants, or in the “sap” or flashlight pocket on the back of the leg on some uniforms. These positions make the knife easily accessible to you, but they also make it very easily accessible to suspects during any hands-on confrontation, or if they somehow catch you off guard.

Try this: Slide the knife inside your waistband on your uniform pants, between your pants and tucked in uniform shirt, clipping the pocket clip to the waistband of your pants to secure it. Place the knife where it is most comfortable between your belt buckle and your gun, on your gun side. This allows the knife to be concealed from view of suspects, to be quickly accessed with both hands, and moves the weapon away from suspects as far as possible when you “blade your stance” to move your gun away as most of us are taught.

Now I know some of your are saying, “My knife is too big...that’s not going to be comfortable”. Guys I have a CRKT M16-SF. The knife is 5 inches closed and it conceals perfectly. Try canting the knife at a 45 degree angle with the bottom of the knife pointing in towards your gig-line. If that’s still not comfortable, get a smaller knife.
