AUSTIN, Texas — An Austin police officer who fatally shot a burglary suspect who resisted arrest and opened fire last April will face no charges.
A jury concluded that Officer Armando Perez will face no charges in the death of 25-year-old Darrin Martin, KHOU reported.
According to the publication, a worker at an apartment complex thought Martin was acting suspicious and confronted him. After Martin fled the scene, the worker called 911 and pursued him. Officer Perez caught up to the pair in a parking lot.
Perez was attempting to handcuff Martin when he pulled a handgun and shot Perez in the torso below his vest. Perez returned fire and killed Martin.
Perez was treated at a hospital and recovered from his injuries.
