BALTIMORE — Police released video of an officer fatally shooting a gunman who was targeting a driver.

The Coppin State University officer was driving in an unmarked vehicle on Dec. 13 when the car in front of him came to a stop. Lavar Douglas, 18, ran out of the vehicle he was in and opened fire on another driver, according to WJZ. The officer drew his gun and fatally shot Douglas. The driver Douglas shot at kept driving. The person who was driving Douglas fled the scene.

The officer, who is not being identified, has been with the department for 14 months.

Fellow officers and Police Chief Leonard Hamm said the quick-thinking actions of the officer prevented more injuries.

“I don’t know if I would have been able to have the presence of mind to stop somebody from doing what they were doing, call for an ambulance and preserve that crime scene,” Hamm told the news station. “That’s what that officer did.”
