ORLANDO, Fla. — A teenager has been arrested and charged for allegedly running over an Orlando police officer during a June 15 traffic stop , Orlando Sentinel reported.
Officer William Anderson was responding to calls of shots being fired in the area with several vehicles fleeing the scene.
The video shows Anderson stopping behind a sedan in the left-turn lane. He is seen running up to the vehicle with his gun drawn, and lunging towards the 17-year-old driver. As the passenger jumps and runs out of the vehicle’s side door, Anderson runs in front of the vehicle to pursue the passenger on foot. The driver attempts to flee the scene and runs over Anderson in the process.
Anderson was left lying in the intersection for several seconds before a helpful citizen stopped their car to block traffic.
“Thank you to the citizen that blocked Officer Anderson’s body as he laid in the road after he was run over,” OPD spokeswoman Sgt. Wanda Ford said in a statement to the publication. “His actions prevented Officer Anderson from being struck by another vehicle. Officer Anderson remains hospitalized from his injuries.”
The vehicle was set on fire and abandoned Monday.
The teen was charged with attempted second-degree murder on law enforcement and resisting arrest with violence, police said in a press conference Tuesday after they made an arrest. Two other people in the vehicle do not currently have charges against them, but two of the suspects’ parents have filed excessive force complaints against Anderson.
