MALVERN, Ark. — A suspect has been arrested after a trooper was shot during a traffic stop.
On Sunday, Arkansas State Trooper Kyle Sheldon was shot and wounded during a traffic stop at a gas station, KATV reports. Police said 49-year-old Elsbeth Tresa Kittinger fired on Sheldon after the trooper asked her to step out of her vehicle.
Malvern Police Department officers, who were parked near the trooper after answering an unrelated call in the area, returned fire on Kittinger. Police said officers fired again at the suspect as she fled from the scene.
Police said Kittinger was wounded by officers and was treated at a hospital, according to KARK. She was arrested after being treated and is being held at a detention center.
Sheldon was transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The Arkansas State Police said in a Facebook post that they will release more details soon and that “we ask for your thoughts and prayers for our trooper, his family and his ASP partners.”
An investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
