KENTLAND, Ind. — An inmate who was being extradited from an Illinois county to an Indiana county escaped officers, acquired a firearm and got into a shootout with police Wednesday morning.

FOX59.com reported that Jayme Lopez, 36, escaped from the transport vehicle upon arrival at the Newton (Ind.) County Jail. Officers and state troopers searched for Lopez, who had forced entry into a nearby apartment. Police told FOX59 that Lopez had acquired a gun during his escape.

After several attempts at negotiation, Lopez fired multiple shots toward responding officers. A Jasper County (Ind.) Sheriff’s Tactical Squad member returned fire, striking Lopez, according to the report. Lopez surrendered to police and was airlifted to a hospital.
