WINNETKA, Calif. — An armed man was shot and killed by Los Angeles police on Saturday, Dec. 30 in Winnetka, authorities said.

The shooting took place at 7:20 p.m. when officers responded to an assault-with-deadly-weapon and shots-fired radio call in the 6900 block of Oakdale Avenue, said Los Angeles Police Department Officer Irma Mota.

When officers from the Topanga Division arrived, they heard shots being fired and saw the suspect leave the location.

“He was holding a gun and that’s when an officer-involved shooting occurred,” Mota said.

LAPD Headquarters said via Twitter Saturday night that officers were responding to a “family dispute” with reports of the suspect possibly armed with a handgun.

The handgun was recovered at the scene, according to authorities.

An officer was taken to a hospital with a non-threatening injury, according to LAPD. The officer did not sustain a gunshot wound.

The suspect was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead, Mota said.

Saturday’s police shooting comes one week after a 32-year-old Canoga Park man, whom police described as a battery suspect armed with a metal bar, was shot dead by police. Police had responded to a 911 call from the home after a family dispute had turned violent.

On Sunday, Dec. 31, another police shooting occurred; this time, in Koreatown in LAPD’s Olympic Division. Officers responded to a call of a man armed with a gun causing a disturbance in the area of Western Avenue north of 9th Street, according to LAPD Headquarters. The call came in at about 12:10 a.m., Mota said.

“The suspect pointed what appeared to be a handgun at the officers and an (officer-involved shooting) occurred,” the agency said via Twitter. “No officers were injured.”

The man was struck and taken to a local hospital with a non-life-threatening injury, LAPD stated.

Detectives were still evaluating the crime scene and evidence to determine “whether it’s a real handgun or a replica,” the agency stated, adding all information is preliminary.
