HUMBLE, Texas — A Humble police officer was released from the hospital early Wednesday morning after he was shot by a robbery suspect the night before.

The robbery suspect, who has been detained but not charged, was shot by officers and is in stable condition, police said.

The shootout stemmed from a robbery incident around 10:50 Tuesday. Officers were dispatched a home, whose residents said they had answered the door to two men saying they wanted to buy a Playstation console. They instead robbed the residence, Humble Police Dept. Capt. Melinda Bradshaw said.

Police came across a vehicle matching the description given by the robbery victims and attempted to stop the vehicle, Bradshaw said. They led police on a short chase until they struck a parked vehicle in a Pappas BBQ parking lot, 19713 Highway 59, Humble police said.

The passenger was detained, but the other ran eastbound on Highway 59, police said.

Other officers arrived and tried to deploy a taser, which was ineffective, police said. The man pulled out a gun and fired at officers, striking a 16-year veteran of the Humble Police Department, Bradshaw said.

Two officers returned fire and struck the man once in the pelvic area, police said.

The injured officer, identified as Cliff Goddard, drove himself to a nearby hospital and was later transported to downtown Memorial Hermann Hospital. The bullet traveled through his chest and left arm, Bradshaw said.

The gunman was transported to Ben Taub with non-life threatening injuries. He underwent surgery and is in stable condition, police officials said.

The Houston Police Department and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the incident.

The accused shooter is pending a charge of aggravated assault on an officer, said Ken Theis, Humble police spokesman and Assistant Chief of Police.

The passenger is pending a charge of theft, Theis said.
