ISLE OF WIGHT, Va. — A Virginia State trooper was shot in the foot Thursday after another trooper fired at an attacking dog while conducting a joint narcotics search by the Isle of Wight Sheriff’s Office and state police, officials said.

The search also led to the arrests of three people on drug-related charges.

The incident happened about 6:15 a.m. while team members from both agencies were conducting the search at a home in the 8700 block of Smithfield Apartments Lane, according to news releases from Virginia State Police and the Isle of Wight Sheriff’s Office.

The search warrant was issued at the home as part of a drug-related investigation by the Meherrin Drug Task Force, Isle of Wight Lt. Tommy Potter said in the release.

When they entered the home, a dog attacked one of the troopers, and another trooper shot at the dog, Anaya said.

One of the rounds struck a trooper in the foot, she said. The dog was fatally wounded, and no one from Isle of Wight fired a weapon, according to the sheriff’s office.

That trooper was taken to a local hospital after suffering an injury that was not considered life-threatening and later released, Anaya said.

Officials arrested three Smithfield residents in connection to the search:
—Gershon Green, 30, of the 8700 block of Smithfield Apartments Lane, charged with possession with intent to distribute heroin, possession with intent to distribute imitation cocaine, possession of ammunition by a convicted felon and possession of marijuana.

—Derrick L. Delk, 21, of the 5000 block of James Way, charged with possession of a schedule 3 narcotic and possession with intent to distribute marijuana

—Direka S. Towns, 31, of the 8700 block of Smithfield Apartments Lane, charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana, possession with intent to distribute schedule 1 or 2 narcotic, possession of a schedule 3 narcotic and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
