GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A man is in the hospital Saturday, Dec. 16 after being shot several times by two Grand Rapids police officers.

According to preliminary information from the scene, the man, 20, was armed with a sharp object that appeared to be a box cutter.

Grand Rapids Police responded around 8:35 a.m. to Union Avenue and Lyon Street NE to a “trouble with a person call,” Capt. Michael Maycroft said. Arriving officers encountered the man “acting erratically” in an alley near Innis Avenue. He then pulled out what police called an edged weapon and charged at one of the officers.

Police shot at the man, hitting him multiple times, Maycroft said. He was then transported to a local hospital and was last in surgery for his injuries.

The Grand Rapids Police officers, both with the department for over 20 years, were not injured. Per protocol, they will be placed on administrative leave while Michigan State Police investigates the shooting.
