7-year-old boy on mission to thank every NYPD officer

The child is visiting every precinct to show his gratitude

NEW YORK — A second grader is on a mission to thank every New York police officer for their service, ABC News reported.

Zachary Becerra, 7, and his mom, Rosa Ortiz, have dedicated most Saturdays since last December to visit officers and say thank you.

The shooting deaths of police last year in New York triggered Zachary’s need to show appreciation to the officers, his mother told the publication. They came up with the idea of delivering cards with superheroes, because that’s what he believes police are.

“They [officers] tell him that he’s the hero. It’s been wonderful,” Ortiz told ABC News.

They have visited 52 precincts, seven transit units, two housing units and 13 specialty units. So far, Zachary has handed out more than 2,000 cards, APlus reported.

In return, officers give Zachary book bags, patches, stuffed animals and declarations of support for his dream to become a cop.

“He really loves the K-9 Unit,” Ortiz told APlus. “He says that’s where he would like to work in.”
