STANDISH, Maine — Maine State Police investigators are searching for a young woman they say stole handguns, state police uniform shirts, an expired state police ID card and a birth certificate from the home of a state trooper sometime last week.
Trooper Joseph Bureau discovered the burglary and theft last Friday, according to a release from Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
No one was home when the burglary occurred, McCausland said. The culprit stole a .45-caliber handgun and a Beretta 9 mm handgun, each in plastic gun cases, which were privately owned by Bureau. The guns are similar to what state police troopers used at one time.
Also stolen were three long-sleeved state police uniform shirts, Bureau’s old state police ID card and his birth certificate.
Police believe Bureau’s home was specifically targeted, and the burglary took place mid-week while Bureau was working his normal patrol shift.
They are searching for a young woman who parked a dark-colored, four-door sedan in the driveway of a neighbor of Bureau’s around 9 p.m. one night last week. The neighbor spoke briefly with the woman, McCausland said.
Anyone with information about the woman or the crime is asked to call the Maine State Police Gray barracks at 657-3030, leave an anonymous tip at the Maine State Police “report a crime” website.
