MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — An attempt by officers to be nice backfired when a drunk teenager destroyed their department’s lobby, The Morning Sun reported.
The 19-year-old suspect, Dominic Cardes, had been picked up and cited by officers for drinking at a party, Public Information Officer Jeff Browne told the publication. Cardes told officers he wasn’t sure how to get to where he was staying, and was only dressed in a tank top in the 32 degree night. Officers offered the department’s warm lobby for Cardes to wait and use a public phone to call for a ride.
“Our lobby area is open to the public 24-7,” Browne told The Morning Sun. “It’s not unusual for someone to make arrangements and wait there for a ride.”
Cardes called a cab but while he waited, the footage shows him throwing around several objects. He destroyed a candy machine, an emergency phone and eventually a chair.
Browne told the publication Cardes was in the lobby for a total of an hour. When officers walked in to check on him, Cardes was attempting to leave in a cab.
Cardes was arrested and charged with malicious destruction of police property and resisting and obstructing.
Police found his blood alcohol level to be at .13, one and a half times the legal limit.
Damages are still being tallied but will be several hundred dollars, Browne said to the news site.
