Video released in NYPD shooting of bodega worker

Investigators say when the suspect hit the officer, one round was fired into the suspect’s shoulder

NEW YORK — Police have released video in the fatal shooting of a shop worker who they say ran at an officer and caused his gun to fire.

Surveillance video shows an officer stand outside the front doors a Bronx bodega Friday, with his gun drawn. The store manager runs outside and is followed closely by employee Renaldo Cuevas, who runs into the officer, sending both down to the sidewalk.

Investigators say when Cuevas hit the officer, it caused him to fire one round into Cuevas’ shoulder. He later died at the hospital.

The death appears to be an accident, police said. The officer, who has not been identified, has been given administrative duties until an investigation is complete.

Police commissioner Ray Kelly said although the death of Cuevas is tragic, he sees “nothing wrong with the procedure.”

It was after midnight when three men entered the bodega, pointed guns and threatened to kill workers if store manager Felix Mora did not produce cash.

“I was praying for the cops to come,” Mora said.
