SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. An Arizona mayor who declined a request for a moment of silence for fallen Detective John Hobbs at a city council meeting has apologized.

According to AZ Central, Scottsdale resident Michael Aloisi asked the city council for a moment of silence in honor of Detective Hobbs, who was killed Monday during a shootout with an attempted-murder suspect.

Mayor Jim Lane denied the request.

Phoenix Law Enforcement Association President Joe Clure demanded the mayor issue a public apology.

“I find it outrageous. I find it offensive. I find it a bit of arrogance,” Clure said. “I find it concerning with an elected official somehow doesn’t think it’s appropriate to recognize the sacrifice of a Phoenix police officer.”

The city council eventually held the moment of silence, at the end of the meeting with four community members in the audience, according to the report.

Mayor Lane issued a public apology Wednesday.
