EL MONTE, Calif. — An officer may not be alive today if it wasn’t for the actions of his lieutenant 27 years ago.

According to CBS Los Angeles, 27-year-old Officer Tyler Blue Dominguez recently discovered he was saved during his birth by his supervisor, Lt. Chris Cano.

Cano, who was a paramedic at the time, was among those called to Dominguez’s home when his mother was giving birth in the driveway. Cano had to free Dominguez’s umbilical cord from around his neck.

Recently, while Dominguez was telling his colleagues the story about his birth, Cano realized that he was the one who helped save him.

Dominguez’s unique middle name comes from that day because his face and body had a deep blue hue when he was born.

Out of 13 babies Cano delivered during his time as a paramedic, Dominguez’s delivery was the only one that was life-threatening.

“Lt. Cano and Officer Dominguez immediately realized that fate had brought them together again,” police wrote in a news release.

Cano became an officer in 1997.
