SUNRISE A police officer jumped into a canal early Wednesday and saved a drowning man after the man jumped into the water, distraught over problems with his ex-girlfriend, Lt. Robert Voss said on Thursday.

Officer Daniel Ransone had responded twice to the home in the 11100 block of Northwest 35 Street because a man kept knocking on his ex-girlfriend’s door. When he showed up a third time, at 3:17 a.m., after already having been issued trespass warnings, he fled, leaping into a nearby canal, Voss said.

For a few minutes, the man struggled in the water, then disappeared in the canal’s waters, Voss said. Ransone, who works midnights, jumped in and saved his life, Voss said.

The man was treated and subsequently arrested for stalking, resisting arrest without violence and trespassing. Ransone was unavailable for comment on Thursday.
