MOLINE, Ill. — A Moline police officer has been recognized for his quick thinking in saving a family’s home from burning down.
WQAD reports Officer Steven Murphy was patrolling the neighborhood when a 911 call came in about a house fire started by birthday candles. He arrived at the home 47 seconds later, took his fire extinguisher from his patrol vehicle and ran into the house to extinguish the flames.
“He just grabbed the extinguisher, ran into the front door, extinguished the flames,” homeowner Jon Ruud told WQAD. “… He did not have to do that. He’s not a firefighter. It’s truly a great example of protect and serve.”
Ruud nominated Murphy for Employee of the Quarter in recognition of his bravery. In a Facebook post, the Moline Police department praised Murphy for his actions.

“Had he not acted in such a manner, the amount of damage and property loss would have been substantial,” the post reads. “There is no doubt Officer Murphy’s swift and brave actions minimized property loss and destruction.”
