MERRILLVILLE, Ind. — A police officer shot in the head late Friday is in critical condition.
The Post-Tribune reports 24-year-old Officer Nickolaus Schultz was shot after police responded to reports of an evicted tenant returning to his former home.
Despite previous media reports that Schultz was taken off life support, the Post-Tribune and WISH-TV report Schultz is still in the intensive care unit, but in ‘grave condition,’ according to Robert Byrd, spokesman for the Northwest Indiana Major Crimes Task Force.
The 33-year-old suspect, Michael Hrnciar, opened fire as police arrived at the scene. Hrnciar was reportedly wearing body armor. He died at the scene.
Schultz was transported to a hospital in critical condition.
Schultz has been with the Merillville Police Department for 13 months, according to the report.
