WASHINGTON — A New Mexico officer who adopted an opioid-addicted baby will be a guest at President Trump’s State of the Union.

The Las Cruces Sun-News reports that Albuquerque Officer Ryan Holets will attend the address on Tuesday.

Holets received the news after his sergeant told him he had a message from the White House, according to the Albuquerque Journal. The officer initially didn’t believe it was true.

“It’s a great honor to be invited to the White House and be able to meet the president,” he said. “It’s just something I would never turn down.”

The invitation came after Holets adopted a heroin-addicted mother’s newborn last year. Holets found the woman, who was pregnant, and a man using heroin near a convenience store in September. Instead of charging the two, Holets asked to adopt the unborn child.

The baby, who was named “Hope,” was born with an opioid addiction. The baby is now 10 weeks old and is recovering.
