CLEVELAND — A Cleveland cop’s quick thinking saved a dog’s life.

Officer Michael Phelps responded to a call of a dog dangling from a second-floor balcony on March 30, Fox 8 Cleveland reports.

The dog, which was tied to a leash, had jumped over the balcony and was hanging over the railing. A woman who lived on the first floor of the home called police to report the dog was choking.

The dog is dying,” the frantic woman told a 911 dispatcher.

When Phelps and his partner arrived on scene, Phelps quickly jumped on the porch and stood on his toes so he could lift the dog up on his shoulders.

“I wanted to give him a chance to breathe,” Phelps said. “My main concern was making sure the dog would be OK. I am a huge dog lover.”

Additional officers arrived and were able to help Phelps get the dog down, uninjured.

The dog, along with another dog that lived at the home, were taken to the city kennel.

The Animal Protective League is investigating the incident and the owners are planning to surrender the dogs.

They both could be up for adoption soon, which is great news for Phelps.

“I would so love to adopt him,” Phelps said. “I mean, I can always add another member to my family.”
