NY man gets jail after hoax 911 call

Call led NJ state troopers to draw guns when they stopped a van carrying minority teenage students

TRENTON, NJ — A New York City man whose hoax 911 call led New Jersey state troopers to draw their guns when they stopped a van carrying minority teenage students has been sentenced to 90 days in jail.

Rodney A. Tanzymore is black and was one of the people in the van. He also received three years of probation at his sentencing Thursday in Trenton and was ordered to continue mental health counseling.

The 20-year-old Queens resident won’t have to serve the jail time because he received credit for time served following his February arrest.

Tanzymore pleaded guilty in July to causing a false public alarm. He admitted falsely reporting in November 2009 that members of the group got out of the van at a New Jersey Turnpike service area carrying handguns.

The police response initially raised concerns over racial profiling.
