SAN JOSE, Calif. — Police searched a large San Jose mobile home park early Friday for an armed man who fired multiple shots at officers after the car he was riding in was pulled over for a routine traffic stop, police said.
About 80 officers, including members of the San Jose police SWAT team, were combing the Pepper Tree Mobile Home Park at 2150 Monterey Highway for the suspect, police sergeant Mike Sullivan said.
The incident began shortly after 1:30 a.m. when officers pulled over a sedan near the intersection of Tully Road and Monterey Highway.
A man emerged from the passenger side and fired several shots from a handgun. He fled on foot along nearby railroad tracks and jumped a fence into the mobile home park. Officers later determined that the car had been stolen.
About two hours later, officers spotted the suspect trying to jump a fence, but he retreated back into the mobile home park.
The park has about 500 mobile homes, Sullivan said. No one was injured and residents were being asked to remain inside while the search continued. Police closed a one-mile-long stretch of 7th Street, between Tully Road and Phelan Avenue, while the search continued.
The driver of the car, who was not identified, was arrested and booked for possession of a stolen car, police said.
