FREMONT, Cali. — A man who wounded his estranged wife’s boyfriend and threatened to kill her was shot dead early Sunday by Fremont police after he brandished a large knife at officers, authorities said.
The slain man, a 34-year-old Newark resident whose name was not immediately released, was shot about 2:30 a.m. inside the Camden Village apartment complex at 38000 Camden St., said Fremont police Detective Bill Veteran.
The incident began when the woman’s boyfriend, whose name was withheld, called police to say that he had been attacked by the suspect and kicked out of the apartment in the city’s Centerville neighborhood, Veteran said. The boyfriend also said there were three children, ages 2, 4 and 9 in the apartment and that his girlfriend was bleeding, police said.
When officers arrived, the suspect refused to let them into the apartment. They then forced their way in and were confronted by the knife-wielding suspect, Veteran said. Three officers fired their weapons, killing the suspect, investigators said.
The wife and her boyfriend suffered minor injuries apparently during a scuffle with the suspect before police arrived, Veteran said. The children were not hurt, he said.
