CALIFORNIA CITY, Calif. — The California City Police Department is mourning the loss of one of their own.

K-9 Ty was receiving treatment for back injuries he sustained after apprehending a suspect earlier this year, 23ABC reported

Even after surgery, Ty continued to serve as an officer, the TV station reported.

His handler Officer Rivera posted on the K-9 Unit’s Facebook page that Ty died Wednesday morning.

“Ty was the best kind of friend. The best kind of partner. I watched and felt all the pain leaving his body. I held him close letting him know he was a good boy, a big strong pup that could take on the world, and mans...my best friend,” Rivera said. “I watched his life leave him but I saw how relaxed and pain free he was.”
