CHAPARRAL, N.M. — A man was arrested and accused of speeding off with a Doña Ana County sheriff’s deputy in his car during a traffic stop in Chaparral last month, sheriff’s officials said Wednesday.

Roberto Garcia, 26, faces a felony charge of aggravated fleeing of a law enforcement officer in a confrontation recorded on a patrol car dash camera.

At 10:40 p.m. Feb. 20, a deputy pulled over Garcia in a car at McCombs Road and Red Sun Drive, officials said. Garcia, who had an arrest warrant in Otero County, allegedly refused to get out of the car.

“I already know you are going to arrest me,” Garcia is heard saying in the video before driving away with the deputy in the car after the deputy opened his door and tried to pull out Garcia.

“Stop the car right now,” the deputy is heard saying on the video as the car drives away. The deputy hit Garcia in the head with a flashlight before Garcia eventually stopped the car down the block, officials said.

“That was the dumbest thing you could’ve done, man,” the deputy tells Garcia in the video.

Garcia also faces charges of speeding, failure to provide a driver’s license, resisting and possession of drug paraphernalia, officials said.
