Video: Chicago police pull controversial ‘80s training video

According to a DOJ report, the 35-year-old use-of-force video was “clearly out of date” with today’s police standards

CHICAGO — Chicago police have stopped using a use-of-force training video deemed out-of-date by the Justice Department.

According to ABC7 News, the DOJ said the 35-year-old “Shoot, Don’t Shoot” video taught police improper and illegal use of force.

The DOJ investigation found that the video was recorded prior to SCOTUS decisions that changed use-of-force standards.

“The video is of little value because methods and techniques used by police for applied force have changed either because the new methods are safer and more effective, or because a technology has eclipsed the old methods,” criminal law professor Hugh Mundy told the news station.

The report states that police trainers showed the video to rookies without context.

Department officials told ABC7 that the scenarios depicted in the video “still apply” and they will “recreate the scenarios in a more modern setting.”
