SAN FRANCISCO — In a thrilling Sunday night rescue, a man clinging to a gravel rock face at a national park site in California was winched to safety by a crew in a helicopter, officials said.
The man had fallen 50 to 60 feet from a trail in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area’s Battery Alexander in Mill Valley, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office said on Facebook.
The sheriff’s office said it had received a call about a man on the side of a cliff at approximately 7:40 p.m. and its Henry-1 helicopter located him with thermal imaging.
The helicopter landed nearby, and a line and a rescue worker were dropped down to the man to pull him to safety, the sheriff’s office reported.
A dramatic video shared by the sheriff’s office shows the man hanging from the side of the cliff.
The man was transported to the top of the cliff, where he received medical aid.
The sheriff’s office and Golden Gate National Recreation Area did not immediately respond to a request for additional information.
