COVINA, Calif.- A Covina police officer who was left in a state of semi-consciousness following a 2003 car crash has died of complications from his injuries.
Scott Hanson, 45, died at a hospital Monday. He was a 22-year veteran of the department and the first Covina Police officer to die in an on-duty incident.
Hanson’s patrol car was hit by a van in August 2003. The car spun out and hit the wall of a restaurant.
The accident left Hanson in a semiconscious state. While he could hear and understand, Hanson could not speak and required constant care.
He retired from the department a year later.
