GREENPORT, N.Y. — A Greenport man was arrested early yesterday after resisting arrest and fleeing Southold Town police, officials said.

Ronald Smith, 41, had been pulled over for a defective headlight, and when Southold police asked him to take field sobriety tests, refused, police said. Smith then fought with the officer who was attempting to remove him from the car, they said.

Smith grabbed the officer’s arm and put his car in drive, police said in a statement. He dragged the officer a short distance before stopping at a private house, where the officer was able to free himself, police said. Three other officers helped restrain Smith, who was charged with two counts of assault, two counts of reckless endangerment, resisting arrest and driving while intoxicated.

A Southold police officer was treated for a laceration on his arm and released.
