Police in the Bay Area arrested more than 500 motorists on suspicion of driving under the influence over the Memorial Day weekend, the California Highway Patrol said Tuesday.

From Friday through Monday, officers in the nine Bay Area counties arrested 531 people for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, with not all agencies reporting. Last year, there were 611 arrests.

The annual crackdown involved extra patrols and eight sobriety checkpoints Friday and Saturday nights. Similar drunkendriving crackdowns will be conducted over the Fourth of July and Labor Day weekends.
