WILDWOOD, N.J. — A New Jersey police department released body cam footage of an arrest at a beach after cellphone video of the incident went viral.
On Wednesday, the Wildwood Police Department released footage of officers confronting 20-year-old Emily Weinman, who was suspected of underage drinking, over Memorial Day weekend, CBS News reports. The officers involved were under scrutiny after a bystander’s footage of the incident that was posted over the weekend went viral.
Police said Weinman refused to cooperate, and then assaulted an officer. The body cam footage shows officers asking Weinman to take a breathalyzer test after police saw her with alcoholic drinks. Police later tried to cite her for possession of alcohol but she refused to cooperate.
When officers try to arrest her, Weinman appears to reach out and push an officer before the camera cuts out. The video comes back when the officer is on top of Weinman with his arm on her neck.
The officer then appears to swing his arm and hit her repeatedly, which is the moment the bystander’s video captured. Weinman appears to spit at one of the officers as she is being handcuffed. The officers later can be heard explaining their version of the events.
“She kicked him. And then I just, I hit her a couple of times,” one officer said.
After the video went viral, two officers were placed on administrative duty pending an internal investigation. The officers are reportedly fully trained, part-time officers used during the busy beach season.
Weinman faces several charges, including two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer.
