TEMPE, Ariz. — A woman is dead and a police officer has been seriously injured after she slammed into his patrol car, closing a major Phoenix-area freeway before the Wednesday morning commute.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety says a woman who reportedly had been driving erratically was fatally injured when her vehicle struck a parked DPS vehicle shortly after 3 a.m. MST.
The DPS says the officer and an observer inside the officer’s vehicle were both seriously injured.
The Arizona Department of Transportation says the southbound Loop 101 freeway is closed at the Loop 202 freeway. Ramps from the 202 to the southbound 101 also are closed.
ADOT says the closure likely will last through the morning commute, but it reports only a little additional traffic slowing so far.
