RIVERDALE, Ill. — One man was killed and an Illinois state trooper was injured in a crash that shut down the northbound lanes of Interstate 57 near south suburban Riverdale Monday morning, authorities said.
The accident happened around 2:30 a.m. on northbound I-57 near 138th Street, officials said. The trooper had just left the scene of a different fatal traffic crash when his squad car was cut off by a second vehicle whose driver lost control for an unknown reason, according to a statement from Sgt. Jaqueline Cepeda.
The trooper couldn’t avoid striking the other vehicle with his squad car and after colliding, both vehicles left the road and struck a wall, she said. A man in the other vehicle was taken to an area hospital where he died as a result of his injuries, officials said.
The trooper was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. Officials have not released any more information about the trooper’s condition.
