SUMTER, S.C. — When a Sumter County Sheriff’s deputy responded to a report of a collision, he didn’t know his wife was one of the fatalities, KRMG reported.

Deputy Wayne Browder was first on scene when he discovered his wife and mother of three, Teresa Browder, was involved and killed in the collision.

Teresa, 45, was on her way to work when an SUV driving the opposite direction crossed the centerline and hit her SUV head-on, South Carolina Highway Patrol told WLTX. The other driver also hit another vehicle.

“Today was a tragic day for one of our officers, as well as our entire agency, as one of our family members deal with the loss of a loved one,” Sheriff Anthony Dennis said in a statement obtained by WLTX. “We ask that you keep the Browder family in your thoughts and prayers as they cope with this terrible loss.”

The incident is still under investigation.
