YAKIMA, Wash. — Police say a man who fired a shotgun in the emergency room of a Washington state hospital hoped to provoke an officer into killing him.

The blast Saturday didn’t hit anyone, but an officer working as a security guard at Sunnyside Community Hospital suffered a cut on his head in the fight to disarm the man.

According to a police statement filed in court, witnesses said the armed man walked into the waiting room and demanded to see a police officer.

The Yakima Herald-Republic reports that the 18-year-old Sunnyside man made a court appearance Monday and was ordered held on $100,000 bail on suspicion of assault.

The affidavit says officers believe the man was trying to put the guard into a situation to fire a fatal shot.
