10 Tex. Cops Chase Driver For 40 Miles

KPRC-TN News, Houston

HOUSTON -- A high-speed chase through northwest Houston and Harris County landed a driver in jail after the person avoided three road spikes, caused a police unit to collide with another vehicle, and crashed a pickup into an apartment complex, News2Houston reported.

The pursuit started in Houston around 2:50 a.m. and moved about 40 miles west toward Highway 90. Officials said the driver maintained a speed of 80 mph throughout most of the chase.

The chase ended around 3:45 a.m. when the driver of the truck crashed into a gate at the Lakewood Apartments complex on Highway 249 at Spring Cypress.

Officials arrested the driver at the scene.

A Houston Police Department officer en route to the pursuit never made it because the officer’s patrol unit collided with another car at the intersection of Highway 290 and Huffmeister.

Officials said the police officer was not injured in the accident, and that they are investigating to see if the officer or car’s driver had the right-of-way.

“The officer was running with his emergency equipment on. At this point in time, I am unclear on what (traffic) light he had. We have no independent witnesses (or they didn’t remain at the scene),” Harris County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Darryl Coleman said.

The two people inside the vehicle were transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital with minor injuries.

Charges are pending against the driver who led the police pursuit.
