As we look back on 2006, we recall that it was marked by the painful 5th anniversary reminder of the September 11th attacks and the blocking of additional major terrorist attack plans, including those targeting NYC tunnels and international jetliners. We also learned of the continued price being paid by the courageous first responders who now face serious, potentially fatal illnesses sparked by toxins released at the attack sites.

. . . but deeply inspired by the never-say-die heroes whose valiant efforts to overcome adversity and courageously protect the innocent kept us in awe.

Throughout 2006, as with all years, officers stood strong in the face of unthinkable crimes, remained motivated to deal with increasing tactical and legal challenges, stayed firm in the face of controversy, and continued to selflessly protect others while facing the responsibilities of taking care of their own families.

We were faced with jarring reminders that this is a 24-7-365 job and threats are ever-present; on the street, in the squad, off-duty, even at the stationhouse.

Above all, we grieved the loss of 142 officers who gave their all in the line of duty. To their families, we wish peace and comfort. In their memories, we vow perseverance.
