Calif. Police Kill Man Who Brandished Gun in Bank

By David Haldane, Los Angeles Times

A man was shot and killed by Newport Beach police Tuesday after authorities said he became belligerent and brandished a gun in a bank.

Police did not release the name of the man, believed to be in his 30s. He was taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, where he died several hours later, said Sgt. Steve Shulman, a spokesman for the Newport Beach Police Department.

The incident began about 4:15 p.m. when police were called by employees to a Washington Mutual Bank in the 550 block of Newport Center Drive.

Upon arriving, Shulman said, two officers tried talking with the man but “he was not cooperative.”

At one point, Shulman said, “there was some kind of discussion, he pulled out a handgun and either one or both of the officers fired at him — I don’t know how many times — and he went down.”

Police recovered two handguns from the suspect who, according to Shulman, had a long criminal record including two outstanding warrants: one for firing a weapon in the air in a public place and the other for stalking.
