Officer’s apparent suicide puts focus on stressful job
Friends remember the loss of a friend
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A police officer died early Tuesday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in his patrol car, Sheriff John Rutherford said.
Robert Dunn, 39, was one of three officers responding to a disturbance call at 3:30 a.m. The other two officers went in to investigate the call, but Dunn did not follow.
When officers returned a few minutes later, Dunn was found dead in his police car.
“We really don’t know why this has occurred,” Rutherford told WJXT-TV. “He was not under investigation or any of those situations. He was a good officer.”
Dunn did not leave a note behind, police said.
Dunn had been with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office for three years. He was married and the father of two children.
