INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A Marion County sheriff’s civil deputy was killed Friday when a car that ran a stop signal in morning rush hour traffic collided with her unmarked squad car.
Kay C. Gregory, 66, was pronounced dead at Wishard Hospital shortly after the 6:30 a.m. accident with Dena Williams, 30, of Fountaintown.
Witnesses said they saw Williams run a red light, hit Gregory’s car, then veer out of control and hit a fence alongside the street.
Williams was taken to Methodist Hospital for minor injuries. She was listed in fair condition Friday.
“This is just an emotional time for everybody time in the department,” said Sgt. Jan Kistler, crash investigator with the Marion County Sheriff’s Department. “We’re kind of on an emotional roller coaster and you wonder if it’s every going to end.”
Gregory worked for the Indianapolis Police Department from 1969 to 1992, the department said. As a civil deputy for the sheriff’s department, she served court orders and tax warrants.
