PHOENIX, Ariz. — An off-duty Phoenix police officer was one of two drivers killed early Saturday in a collision on Arizona 347 north of Maricopa.
State police said a Pontiac was traveling south in the far-right lane when its driver lost control of the vehicle about 7:20 a.m. The car swerved into the median and vaulted into northbound lanes, partially landing on a Jeep.
Both vehicles rolled in the collision.
The driver of the Jeep died at the scene, and the other driver was pronounced dead at a Valley hospital. There were no other occupants.
The Department of Public Safety did not immediately identify the drivers. However, a Phoenix police spokesman confirmed that the driver of the Pontiac was Officer Jonathan Stuart, who joined Phoenix police in November 2003.
